The sky is the limit for Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital CEO

Get to know more about Andrew Mereau, CEO of Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital

While Tuggerah Private Lakes Hospital may be a relatively new hospital by hospital standards it is currently sitting in the experienced hands of Andrew Mereau, current Chief Executive Officer and Director of Clinical Services.

The Healthe Care Central Coast team sat down with Andrew to ask him some questions to learn more about him as one of the leaders of the Central Coast’s newest hospitals and what his plans are for the site:

Tell us about your path to working in health care?

As a teenager became heavily involved with the St John Ambulance Brigade as a volunteer cadet, and my interest in Medicine and Nursing began. I finished high school and my HSC at 17 years of age, and decided to take a gap year before starting a Nursing Degree. That gap year turned into 10 year and I fell into a career in Commercial radio, firstly as a ‘drive time’ announcer in Longreach in Central Queensland, then moving into production where I worked up to being the National Production Manager of a large radio network of more the 40 stations around the country, based on the Gold Coast. After moving back to the Central Coast and starting our family, I decided to finally do that nursing degree and make the move into Nursing. I now have a Bachelor of Nursing and Post Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing. I also started a Bachelor of Law degree some years back but still need to complete this at some stage.

How did you get your start at Healthe Care?

I started work as a new grad at Hornsby, then moved to Brisbane Waters Private, where I had worked as a cleaner and an Operations Assistant during university. I started on the medical ward, surgical ward and ICU then moved into the Operating Theatres as a Scrub nurse. After two years of hard work and taking every opportunity to learn new skills, I moved into the Theatre Manager role. This has led to some exciting and challenging National roles, and most of the last 10 years in a CEO / DCS role at Latrobe Private Hospital in Melbourne, Toronto Private Hospital in Newcastle and now at the brand new Tuggerah Lakes Private on the Central Coast.

What are you trying to achieve at Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital?

Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital is a wonderful new facility with an amazing group of people. Many of the staff were involved in the commissioning and opening of the facility in May 2019. My vision for the Hospital is to see us grow into a large acute surgical facility meeting the needs of the community on the northern end of the Central Coast. I am dedicated to growing, training and nurturing a team of Nurses and Support Staff who are keen to deliver extraordinary patient care. I see our hospital as an integral part of the region, working closely with Gosford Private and Brisbane Waters Private to provide support, growth and learning opportunities as well as career opportunities for staff keen to advance into new fields.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

Seeing patients leave our hospital each day and hearing about their positive experiences. When I see our staff interacting with and caring for our patients in a way that could easily be their own family members, it brings a real joy to my day.

What would someone not know about you?

I have a Private Pilot’s licence with twin engine rating and love to fly.

What does 2021 hold for you and Tuggerah Lakes Private?

This year I am looking to see period of growth in the number of patient admissions and activity as we move forward with planning for stage two building expansion which will also be a priority.
